01Stage 1 — light, dusty soot
Stage 1 creosote is light, flaky, dust-like soot. It shows up when combustion runs relatively complete and the flue stays hot enough to carry most of the byproducts out the top. It brushes off with no trouble, a standard rod-and-brush sweep clears it with no special tooling, and it is exactly the shape a system stays in when it gets swept every year and burned well.
Stage 1 is the target, not the trouble. Burning dry, seasoned hardwood under twenty percent moisture, leaving the air supply open so the fire runs hot instead of smoldering, and sweeping on schedule all hold creosote at this easy first stage. When an annual sweep turns up nothing more than Stage 1 buildup, that is the plainest sign a fireplace is being run the right way.
02Stage 2 — hardened, flaky tar
Stage 2 creosote is the granular, brittle black flakes most people picture when they imagine a dirty chimney. It builds up when the fire runs cooler and smokier than it should, from wet wood, a choked air supply, an oversized flue that lets exhaust cool too quickly, or long, low overnight burns. The condensed tar hardens into shiny black flakes that grip the flue walls.
Stage 2 comes out, but it no longer dusts away. Clearing it takes a more aggressive mechanical approach, a rotary whip-rod system fitted with the correct head for the flue type. It is the most dangerous form there is, and it is the fuel that turns a routine fire into a chimney fire. Glazed creosote lights off near 2,000°F, hot enough to crack and puff clay tiles, craze a liner, warp metal components, and breach the structure in ways that turn the next ordinary fire into a house fire.
A standard brushing will not touch Stage 3 glaze. Clearing it takes a rotary chain modification or a chemical treatment that breaks the glaze down so it can be mechanically removed, and in the worst cases the honest answer is relining instead of rodding a flue that cannot really be cleaned.
