A wood-burning insert is a UL 1482 listed wood stove engineered to retrofit into an existing masonry or prefab fireplace, transforming an inefficient open hearth into a high-efficiency heating appliance. EPA Phase 2 certification is required for current production units, ensuring particulate emissions stay below 2.5 grams per hour. Wood-burning inserts deliver 70 to 80 percent thermal efficiency compared to 10 percent for open fires.

The insert slides into the existing fireplace opening, with an insulated stainless steel liner connected from the unit’s exhaust collar up through the existing flue to the chimney top. A faceplate or surround seals the gap between the insert and the fireplace opening, preventing room air from being pulled into the chimney. The unit’s secondary combustion technology, typically a catalytic combustor or a non-catalytic baffle, burns smoke at high temperature, extracting maximum heat and minimizing emissions.
