What is a Transition Duct? | TSE Glossary

A transition duct is the short flexible section connecting the back of the dryer to the rigid wall vent, accommodating the small movement that occurs during dryer use and allowing the appliance to slide for service. The IRC limits transition duct length to 8 feet maximum, and only UL 2158A listed transition ducts may be used. White vinyl flexible ducts and aluminum foil flex ducts are explicitly prohibited because both are highly flammable.

A code-compliant transition duct uses semi-rigid aluminum or stainless steel construction with a smooth interior surface, listed to UL 2158A. The two ends terminate at the dryer’s exhaust collar and at the rigid wall vent or periscope adapter, with worm-gear hose clamps securing each connection. The 8-foot maximum length includes any bends or kinks, and the duct must be visible and unconcealed for inspection.

Failed transition ducts are among the most common causes of residential dryer fires. White vinyl ducts melt and burn at relatively low temperatures, and the corrugated interior of foil flex ducts traps lint readily. Sweeps and dryer-vent specialists replace any nonconforming transition duct as part of every dryer-vent service visit, regardless of whether it appears intact.

DFW homes built before 2010 frequently shipped with white vinyl or aluminum foil transition ducts that have since been outlawed under successive IRC editions. Replacement is a fast, low-cost upgrade that significantly reduces fire risk, and TSE includes transition duct inspection on every dryer-vent cleaning visit. The conversion to UL 2158A semi-rigid takes 15 minutes and uses materials available from any plumbing or hardware supplier.
