Repointing is the masonry process of renewing mortar joints by removing failed material and replacing it with fresh mortar. In strict preservation usage, repointing refers to any renewal of mortar joints, while tuckpointing originally meant a decorative two-color technique. In modern American practice, the terms are used interchangeably to describe the same procedure: grinding out and replacing chimney mortar.

A typical repointing job begins with assessing joint depth, mortar composition, and brick condition. Technicians grind out compromised mortar to a depth of at least one inch using narrow diamond blades, then clean the joint with brushes and compressed air. New mortar is mixed to match the original strength type and color, packed into the joint in lifts, and tooled to recreate the original profile.

Quality repointing requires patience. Each joint must be moist but not wet when filled, the mortar must be packed tightly against both brick faces, and the tooled finish must match the surrounding work to avoid visual patches. Done well, repointing extends a chimney’s service life by decades; done poorly, it traps moisture and accelerates spalling.

The DFW housing stock has substantial mid-century and earlier masonry that requires generational repointing cycles. Highland Park, Lakewood, and Oak Cliff homes built between 1920 and 1960 are now approaching their second or third repointing event, and TSE technicians must match historical mortar to maintain compatibility with soft original brick. Aggressive cement-rich modern mixes against historic brick produce visible damage within a single freeze-thaw season.
