Pyrolysis is the chemical decomposition of wood under prolonged heat exposure below its normal ignition temperature, gradually converting the cellulose into char with significantly lower ignition resistance. In chimney safety, pyrolysis explains why framing members near a chimney can ignite at temperatures previously considered safe, and why NFPA 211 mandates strict clearances to combustibles even when no immediate ignition risk appears present.

When wood is held at temperatures between 200 and 500 degrees for extended periods, internal moisture drives off, hemicellulose breaks down, and the wood transforms into a darker, lighter, more porous char. Each heating cycle reduces the temperature at which the wood will ignite. After years of repeated cycles, framing originally safe at 1000 degrees can ignite at 250 degrees, well within the surface temperature range of poorly clearance chimneys.

Pyrolysis is invisible from the surface. Inspectors must open framing concealed near chimneys to see the char, which appears as darkened, sponge-textured wood at points of greatest heat exposure. CSIA Level 2 inspections include pulling access panels around chimney chases when conditions warrant, and pyrolyzed framing is one of the most serious findings because it indicates ongoing fire risk that cannot be stopped without correcting clearance violations.

DFW homes with prefab fireplaces in 1990s tract construction occasionally show pyrolyzed framing where original installers ignored the manufacturer’s clearance specifications, often by stuffing insulation against the chimney pipe. The hot Texas attic environment combined with chimney heat accelerates the process. TSE inspections include thermal imaging of chimney enclosures to identify hotspots that may indicate pyrolysis, and remediation requires opening the chase to verify framing condition.
