What is Pellet Vent?

Pellet vent is a sealed double-wall vent system listed to UL 641 and specifically designed for pellet stoves, pellet inserts, and pellet boilers. The inner pipe is typically 304 stainless steel and the outer is galvanized, with a small air gap separating them. Pellet vent operates under positive exhaust pressure created by the appliance’s combustion blower, which means joints must be sealed airtight.

How it works

Pellet stoves use forced-draft combustion, blowing combustion gases out the vent rather than relying on natural draft. This positive pressure means any leak in the vent will exhaust into the home rather than draw outside air in. Pellet vent joints are sealed with high-temperature silicone rated above 500 degrees, and clearance to combustibles is typically 3 inches.

The 4-inch and 3-inch pipe diameters dominate the residential pellet market, with smaller diameters reserved for low-input units. Pellet vent can run horizontally through a wall or vertically through a roof, terminating at a manufacturer-listed cap. Sweeps inspect for ash accumulation in the vent during annual service because pellet ash is fine and accumulates faster than wood-stove deposits.

DFW context

DFW pellet stove installations are concentrated in workshops, hobby spaces, and rural-property hearth rooms because the appliances offer high heating efficiency without the maintenance of cordwood. The region’s cool but not severe winters mean pellet stoves operate at part-load most of the time, which produces more condensate and ash than continuous full-fire operation. TSE recommends annual pellet vent cleaning before each heating season.
