A heat shield is a noncombustible barrier installed near a chimney or fireplace to reduce the required clearance to nearby combustible materials. Heat shields work by blocking direct radiant heat and creating a ventilated air gap that dissipates conducted heat, allowing combustibles to be installed closer than NFPA 211 default clearances would otherwise permit. Listed heat shields with documented reduction values are required for code compliance.

Heat shields use either solid noncombustible sheet such as 24-gauge sheet metal mounted on noncombustible spacers, or proprietary products with documented thermal performance. The mounting must include a 1-inch ventilated air gap between shield and protected combustible to allow convective cooling. NFPA 211 Section 12 lists clearance reduction tables for various shield configurations, with allowable reductions ranging from 33 to 67 percent of default clearances depending on shield type and installation.

For prefab fireplaces and Class A chimneys, the appliance manufacturer may provide listed heat shields specific to their products, with documented reduction values. These manufacturer-supplied shields take precedence over NFPA 211 generic tables. Sweeps verify heat shield installation during CSIA Level 2 inspections, confirming that the shield, air gap, and resulting clearance all match the listing requirements.

DFW custom homes occasionally use heat shields when architectural intent calls for combustible elements closer than default clearances allow, particularly with deep decorative mantels or built-in cabinetry. TSE specifies and installs listed heat shield assemblies during major renovations, working with the homeowner’s architect or designer to integrate the shield into the visible finish. Improvised heat shields without documentation are not code-compliant and create insurance and safety risks.
