What is a Hearth Extension? | TSE Glossary

A hearth extension is the noncombustible floor projection in front of a fireplace opening, required by the IRC to protect combustible flooring from ember and spark ignition. For fireplaces with openings less than 6 square feet, the extension must project at least 16 inches in front of the firebox and at least 8 inches beyond each side. Larger openings require larger extensions: 20 inches in front and 12 inches each side.

The hearth extension is constructed from materials passing ASTM E136 noncombustibility testing: brick, stone, concrete, ceramic tile over a noncombustible substrate, or steel. Combustible flooring underneath must be covered or removed within the extension footprint. The extension may sit flush with the surrounding floor or be elevated as a raised hearth, depending on architectural intent.

For prefab fireplaces, the manufacturer’s installation manual specifies the required extension size and material, which may differ from IRC defaults based on the unit’s listing. Sweeps verify hearth extension compliance during CSIA Level 1 inspections, looking for flooring that has crept inside the required dimensions, missing or damaged materials, and inadequate substrate beneath tile or stone facings.
