A flue fire, commonly called a chimney fire, is the ignition of accumulated creosote inside a chimney flue, producing temperatures that can exceed 2000 degrees and threaten the integrity of flue tile, metal liners, and surrounding framing. Flue fires range from quick flare-ups that self-extinguish to sustained roaring fires audible throughout the home. Any chimney that has experienced one requires CSIA Level 2 inspection">Level 2 inspection before further use.

Creosote ignites at approximately 451 degrees, easily reached by normal fire-burn flue temperatures. Once ignition occurs, the creosote layer becomes the fuel, with combustion sustained by chimney draft. Sounds typical of a flue fire include rumbling, sucking noises, and flames or sparks visible at the chimney top. Severe flue fires produce structural sounds: cracking flue tile, popping metal joints, and groaning brick masonry.

After a flue fire, the chimney must be presumed compromised until proven otherwise. CSIA Level 2 inspection with video scan documents flue tile cracking, mortar joint failure, and metal liner deformation. Building insurance typically covers repair costs when a CSIA Level 2 report establishes the fire’s occurrence and damage extent, but only if the report is generated within a documented timeframe.

DFW flue fires concentrate on chimneys with stage 2 or stage 3 creosote, often in homes where the owner skipped multiple sweeping cycles.
