What is creosote and why is it dangerous? Texas homeowners face unique challenges with their chimneys — extreme heat, sudden cold snaps, and humidity all affect performance. At Texas Service Experts, our certified technicians serve Houston and surrounding areas with answers backed by decades of hands-on experience.

The Short Answer

Creosote is a tar-like residue from incomplete combustion of wood. It progresses through three stages — flaky soot, hardened tar, and glazed armor — and is the single largest cause of chimney fires in the United States.

What You Need to Know

Stage 1 creosote is flaky and easy to brush away. Stage 2 is harder and tar-like. Stage 3 — glazed creosote — is essentially shellac that requires chemical treatment or specialized rotary tools to remove. All three are highly combustible: a chimney fire can exceed 2,000°F, crack flue tiles, and ignite framing within seconds. Annual sweeping is the only reliable prevention.

When to Call a Professional

If you’re seeing warning signs — unusual odors, smoke spillage, water staining, or unfamiliar noises — get a certified technician on site before next burn season. Our professional chimney services include written inspection reports.
