Creosote stage 2 is the intermediate form of chimney creosote: a hard, tarry, brittle deposit that resists ordinary brushing and requires rotary tools, scraping, or chemical pre-treatment for safe removal. It forms when smoldering fires or unseasoned wood produce heavy condensation, leaving a layer that hardens between burns. Stage 2 deposits indicate suboptimal operation and signal the need for owner-education and remediation.

Stage 2 creosote develops when stage 1 deposits combine with fresh tar from low-temperature combustion, layering into a glossy crust that bonds to flue surfaces. The deposit can range from one-quarter to one inch thick and exhibits a flaky-but-attached texture: pieces break off in sheets when struck but do not powder. Sweeps remove it with rotary chains, plastic flails, or chemical creosote modifiers that cause the deposit to flake during subsequent fires.

The danger of stage 2 lies in its energy density. A flue fire in stage 2 deposits sustains itself longer than in stage 1, raising peak temperatures and stress on flue tile or liner. CSIA recommends remediation before the next burning season, and any fireplace presenting stage 2 deposits should be re-evaluated for proper operation, fuel quality, and draft adequacy.
