What is Co-Axial Vent?

A co-axial vent is a vent configuration in which an inner exhaust pipe runs concentrically inside a larger outer pipe that carries combustion air. The two flow paths share the same axis, hence the name. Most direct-vent gas fireplaces use co-axial pipe for its compact footprint and easy installation through wall or roof penetrations.

How it works

The hot exhaust gases exit through the inner pipe while cool combustion air enters through the annular space between the inner and outer pipes. The exhaust heat partially preheats the incoming air, modestly improving combustion efficiency. Co-axial pipe ships in fixed lengths with twist-and-lock or band-clamp joints, and a single penetration through a wall or ceiling carries both flow paths.

Co-axial systems are listed to ANSI Z21.88 and integrated with the appliance’s listing, meaning the appliance manufacturer specifies acceptable co-axial pipe brands and configurations. Substituting non-listed pipe voids the appliance certification. Sweeps verify pipe markings during annual service because aftermarket modifications are a common compliance issue on resold homes.

DFW context

The vast majority of DFW direct-vent gas fireplaces use co-axial vent runs out the back wall to a horizontal termination cap. New construction in master-planned communities such as Light Farms, Phillips Creek Ranch, and Windsong Ranch installs co-axial vent on every direct-vent unit. TSE technicians stock the major manufacturer pipe systems and replace damaged sections with listed components matched to the existing appliance.
