A dryer booster fan is an in-line electric fan installed in a dryer-vent run to overcome the static pressure of long or convoluted ducts that exceed IRC equivalent length limits. Booster fans interlock with dryer operation through current sensing or pressure switching, ensuring the fan runs whenever the dryer fires and continues briefly after for purge. UL listed dryer booster fans are required for code compliance.

The fan installs in the rigid metal duct portion of the run, typically near the appliance to prevent lint accumulation from killing fan performance. A current-sensing module or differential pressure switch detects dryer operation and energizes the fan, ensuring synchronized airflow without manual control. The booster’s added flow capacity allows runs of 50 feet or more equivalent length to perform like much shorter unboosted runs.

Booster fans require maintenance because lint accumulates on the fan blades and motor windings, eventually degrading performance or causing fan failure. Sweeps inspect booster fans during dryer-vent cleaning visits, removing lint, checking electrical connections, and verifying the interlock function. Failed booster fans produce extended dry times and elevated dryer temperatures, mimicking other vent-restriction symptoms.

DFW homes with second-floor laundry rooms, basement laundry rooms remote from exterior walls, and unusual floor plans often require booster fans to achieve compliant performance. New construction in master-planned communities sometimes installs booster fans proactively where vent runs would otherwise approach IRC limits.
