What is a Bird Guard?
A bird guard is the stainless steel mesh component of a chimney cap that prevents birds from entering the flue and building nests inside the chimney. Bird nests in flues are major fire hazards: the dry twigs, leaves, and feathers ignite at low temperatures, and a partially obstructed flue forces combustion gases and CO into the home. Bird guards also protect against bats, squirrels, and raccoons, all of which seek out warm, dark cavities for nesting.
How it works
The bird guard is integrated into the chimney cap as the mesh sidewalls between the cap roof and the base flange. NFPA 211 specifies mesh openings between 5/16 inch and 5/8 inch, sized to exclude wildlife while allowing full exhaust flow. Stainless mesh resists corrosion from acidic flue condensate and is the only practical material for long-term DFW use. Galvanized mesh corrodes within a few seasons.
When a bird guard fails, owners often discover the problem only after birds have already nested. Removing an active nest requires extraction tools, careful handling of any remaining wildlife, and full disinfection because bird droppings carry histoplasmosis and other pathogens. Sweeps inspect mesh integrity during every CSIA Level 1 visit and replace damaged sections promptly to prevent wildlife intrusion.
DFW context
DFW chimney sweeps deal with chimney swifts, European starlings, raccoons, squirrels, and even occasional barred owls in flues, with peak nesting attempts during spring. Chimney swifts are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and cannot be removed during nesting season, which complicates remediation. TSE recommends installing bird guards before spring each year, and the company handles wildlife removal in cooperation with licensed wildlife control operators when active nests are found.
