What is a Vented Gas Log?
A vented gas log is a decorative gas log set listed to ANSI Z21.60 and installed in an existing wood-burning fireplace, intended to operate with the damper fully open and the chimney venting combustion gases outdoors. Vented gas logs prioritize realistic flame appearance over heating efficiency: most output goes up the chimney along with combustion byproducts. They are designed for ambiance rather than heat.
How it works
A burner pan, gas line, and ceramic-fiber log stack are installed on the fireplace floor, with the burner connected to a manual or remote-controlled gas valve. When operating, the open damper allows the yellow, sooty flame characteristic of vented log operation to draw combustion gases up the chimney without spilling into the room. A damper clamp is required to hold the damper open during operation, preventing accidental closure that would force CO indoors.
Vented gas logs cannot be operated with the damper closed without exceeding allowable indoor CO levels. A common DFW failure mode is operating with a partially closed damper to retain heat, which produces measurable CO in living space. Sweeps verify damper clamps are installed during inspections and educate homeowners on proper operation. Annual cleaning of the burner pan and ceramic logs is recommended to maintain appearance and combustion quality.
DFW context
Vented gas logs are the most common gas-burning retrofit in DFW masonry fireplaces, particularly in homes from the 1980s through 2010 where homeowners abandoned wood burning for convenience. The mild Texas winter makes the heat-loss penalty acceptable for most owners. TSE installs vented gas log sets, replaces aged ceramic logs, and services control valves, with mandatory damper-clamp installation as part of every install.
