What is UL 127 Fireplace?

UL 127 is the Underwriters Laboratories standard for factory-built fireplaces, certifying that a prefabricated solid-fuel fireplace assembly meets safety requirements for clearance to combustibles, structural integrity, surface temperature, and proper venting. Every prefab fireplace sold in the United States must carry UL 127 listing, and the listing data plate inside the firebox documents the model, manufacturer, and date of manufacture.

How it works

UL 127 testing subjects candidate fireplaces to extended high-temperature operation while measuring temperatures at clearance surfaces, structural distortion, and emission patterns. The standard also verifies behavior during simulated chimney fires and unusual operating scenarios. Pass criteria include maintained clearance temperatures below combustion thresholds, structural integrity throughout the test, and correct venting performance.

The UL 127 listing is what allows a prefab fireplace to be installed inside a wood-framed chase with code-allowed clearances of 1 to 2 inches rather than the much larger clearances required for masonry construction. Modifying a UL 127 listed fireplace, whether by substituting refractory panels, replacing dampers with non-OEM parts, or installing the wrong vent, voids the listing and removes code compliance.

DFW context

DFW prefab fireplaces from the 1990s and 2000s overwhelmingly carry UL 127 listings, but many have reached end of useful life and require replacement of refractory panels, gaskets, and vent components. TSE replacement work uses only OEM parts to preserve UL 127 listing integrity, and technicians document data plate information on every service call. Discontinued models present sourcing challenges, occasionally requiring full unit replacement when OEM parts are no longer available.
