What is a Top-Mount Damper?

A top-mount damper is a damper-and-cap assembly mounted at the top of the chimney flue rather than at the firebox throat. It uses a cable that runs down the flue to a control bracket inside the firebox, allowing the homeowner to open or close a gasketed lid at the chimney crown. Top-mount dampers seal far tighter than throat dampers, eliminating air loss when the fireplace is idle.

How it works

The unit consists of a cast-aluminum or stainless-steel housing, a hinged lid lined with a high-temperature silicone gasket, a stainless cable, and a firebox-side handle. Pulling the cable lifts the lid against spring tension; releasing it allows the spring to seat the lid airtight against the gasket. Because the lid sits at the crown rather than at the throat, it doubles as a rain cap and animal guard.

Top-mount dampers offer measurable energy savings: independent testing shows airtight seals reduce flue air loss by roughly 90 percent compared with traditional throat dampers. The seal also keeps cold air, insects, debris, and moisture out of the flue when the fireplace is not in use. Installation requires a sweep to size the unit to the flue, drill anchors into the crown, and route the cable through the flue without snags.

DFW context

Top-mount dampers are TSE’s most-recommended energy upgrade for DFW homeowners with leaky throat dampers, and they pair naturally with the heavy hailstorm protection North Texas demands. The cast-aluminum lids withstand the 1.5-inch hailstones that hit DFW five to eight times per year, and the silicone gasket holds up under the region’s freeze-thaw cycles. Annual inspection ensures the gasket has not dried or compressed.
