What is Rigid Metal Duct?

Rigid metal duct is the smooth-wall galvanized steel or aluminum duct required by IRC M1502 for the concealed portion of every residential dryer vent run. Its smooth interior minimizes lint accumulation, and its incombustible material prevents fire propagation. Rigid duct is supplied in 4-inch standard diameter for residential applications, with elbows, couplings, and termination fittings to assemble complete runs.

How it works

Sections are joined with the male end pointing in the direction of airflow, sealed with foil tape rather than screws because screws projecting into the airstream would catch lint. Joints inside concealed wall and ceiling cavities must be accessible for inspection or assembled with smooth interior fittings. Total run length, including elbows counted as equivalent length, is limited to 35 feet for typical residential dryers per IRC M1502.4.5.1.

Compared to flex duct, rigid duct delivers significantly higher airflow and accumulates lint at perhaps one-third the rate. The smooth interior also makes cleaning faster and more thorough. Sweeps and dryer-vent specialists replace flex duct in concealed runs with rigid duct as a standard upgrade during cleaning visits, particularly when long runs or multiple elbows make the existing flex duct functionally inadequate.

DFW context

DFW tract homes built between 1990 and 2010 frequently used flex duct for concealed dryer runs in violation of the IRC then in effect. Many of these installations have produced extended dry times, hot dryer surfaces, or near-miss fire events. TSE replaces flex duct with rigid duct during major dryer-vent service, often combining the work with installation of a periscope adapter at the dryer connection and a fresh exterior termination cap.
