What is a Periscope Vent?

A periscope vent is a low-profile rigid metal adapter that connects a dryer’s exhaust collar to a wall vent in tight spaces, allowing the appliance to sit closer to the wall than a conventional flex duct or rigid elbow would permit. The adapter telescopes to fit specific dryer-to-wall offsets, with adjustable lengths typically from 0 inches to 18 inches. UL 2158A listed periscope adapters meet code as a transition duct substitute.

How it works

The adapter has two parallel sections of 4-inch oval-section duct connected by a 180-degree turn at the top, allowing the dryer collar opening to align with the wall vent collar opening when the dryer sits flush against the wall. The smooth metal interior accumulates lint at the same low rate as rigid duct, and the listed construction meets all IRC requirements for transition ducting. Worm-gear hose clamps secure each end.

Periscope adapters are particularly valuable in laundry closets where the dryer must sit close to the back wall to fit, and in stacked washer-dryer applications where space is at a premium. Sweeps and dryer-vent specialists install periscope adapters during major service visits when the existing flex duct is restricting depth or causing kinks. The adapter typically pays for itself in space gained and reduced cleaning frequency.

DFW context

DFW laundry closets in townhomes, condos, and tract homes are often only 30 to 32 inches deep, leaving little room for proper dryer connection. Periscope adapters are a standard solution that gains 6 to 12 inches of usable depth. TSE installs periscope adapters during dryer-vent cleaning service when space constraints warrant, and the upgrade typically improves dryer performance noticeably by eliminating kinked flex duct.
