What is IRC Chapter 10?

IRC Chapter 10 is the section of the International Residential Code that governs chimneys and fireplaces in one- and two-family residential construction. It addresses masonry fireplaces, masonry chimneys, factory-built fireplaces, factory-built chimneys, exterior air supply, and hearth extensions. The 2021 IRC is the current adoption baseline for most DFW jurisdictions, with some municipalities adopting newer editions on local cycles.

How it works

Chapter 10 specifies dimensional requirements for fireplace components such as throat opening, smoke chamber slope, hearth extension projection, and clearance to combustibles. It references NFPA 211 and various UL standards for testing and listing requirements. Sections progress from masonry construction through factory-built systems, with specific subsections for crown construction, flashing, anchorage, and termination height.

Building permits for fireplace installation, chimney rebuild, or significant repair must demonstrate IRC Chapter 10 compliance, and code inspectors review work against the chapter’s specific provisions. Sweeps cite IRC Chapter 10 alongside NFPA 211 in inspection reports because the two documents work together: IRC sets construction requirements, NFPA 211 covers maintenance and ongoing compliance.

DFW context

DFW municipalities including Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, and Allen adopt the IRC with local amendments. Most operate on the 2021 edition as of 2026, with some municipalities migrating to the 2024 edition. TSE permits all chimney rebuild and major repair work through the relevant jurisdiction and demonstrates IRC Chapter 10 compliance with stamped drawings, mortar specifications, and clearance documentation.
