How it works

The unit is framed into a chase or wall cavity sized to its installation specifications, with combustible clearances respected at every surface. The inset flange laps over the surrounding wall finish to conceal the rough opening. For direct-vent gas units, the vent runs out the back or top of the firebox and exits the chase to a wall or roof termination. Electric inset units require only an electrical circuit.

Inset fireplaces require careful coordination during construction because the rough opening must accommodate combustible clearances, vent paths, electrical connections, and any optional features such as fans or media trays. Sweeps inspect inset installations during CSIA Level 2 visits when accessible, looking for clearance violations in chase framing, blocked vent paths, and damaged finish surfaces from heat exposure.

DFW custom homes and high-end remodels favor inset direct-vent gas units for their clean modern aesthetic, particularly in homes with stone-faced fireplace walls or floor-to-ceiling tile surrounds. The inset format pairs naturally with the linear fireplace category.
