What is an Electric Fireplace?

An electric fireplace is a plug-in or hardwired hearth appliance that simulates flame using LED lights, mirrors, and rotating elements, with optional resistance heating elements that provide supplemental room heat. Electric fireplaces require no combustion, no venting, and no fuel storage. They are listed to UL 2021 for fixed and built-in electric fireplaces, and they install in essentially any location with sufficient electrical service.

How it works

The flame effect is generated by LED arrays projecting light onto rotating internal mirrors or media, creating a convincing illusion of flickering flame without producing any heat from the visual portion. A separate fan-forced resistance heater, usually rated 1500 watts on a standard 120-volt circuit, can be operated independently of the flame effect to provide modest supplemental heating. Some units include adjustable flame color, ember bed media, and remote controls.

Because there is no combustion, electric fireplaces produce no CO, no smoke, and no emissions. They can be installed in apartments, condos, basements, and any room with electrical service, including locations where a vented appliance would be impractical. Sweeps do not typically service electric fireplaces, but TSE provides installation, troubleshooting, and component replacement when needed.

DFW context

Electric fireplaces have grown rapidly in DFW condos, apartments, and accessory dwelling units where venting is impractical. They also appear in flex spaces, master bedrooms, and home offices where ambiance matters more than heating capacity. The mild Texas winter means most electric fireplaces are run primarily for the visual effect rather than meaningful heat. TSE installs hardwired and built-in electric units and provides retail support for plug-in models.
