What is a Custom Copper Cap?
A custom copper cap is a hand-fabricated chimney cap built from 16-ounce or heavier copper sheet, sized to the specific chimney’s dimensions and finished with welded or soldered seams for maximum durability. Copper develops a natural patina over time, adding architectural character that complements high-end residential properties. Properly fabricated copper caps deliver 50-plus years of service in DFW climate.
How it works
The fabricator measures the chimney crown footprint, flue tile dimensions, and any decorative requirements, then cuts copper sheet, forms it on a brake, and seams the components either with soldered joints or with welded seams using copper-compatible filler. Mesh sidewalls use stainless to avoid galvanic corrosion against the copper. The cap is anchored to the crown with copper or stainless hardware, with care taken to prevent dissimilar-metal contact that could accelerate corrosion.
Copper’s superior corrosion resistance and the cap’s hand-fabricated quality make custom copper the premium choice for DFW chimney protection. The natural patina progression from bright copper through brown, then to verdigris green over decades, is a feature that many homeowners specifically request. Sweeps inspect copper caps during annual service, looking for storm damage, mesh integrity, and proper anchorage.
DFW context
Custom copper caps are the standard upgrade for DFW custom homes in Highland Park, Park Cities, Westlake, and Southlake, where homeowners value both durability and aesthetics. The June 2025 hailstorms tested copper cap durability and confirmed that 16-ounce or heavier copper resists the 1.5 to 2-inch hail typical of DFW storms. TSE fabricates custom copper caps in its sheet metal shop with welded seams as standard, and most installations carry 25-year workmanship warranties.
