What is UL 2158A?
UL 2158A is the Underwriters Laboratories safety standard governing clothes-dryer transition ducts, the flexible-but-rigid sections connecting a dryer’s exhaust collar to the home’s rigid wall vent. The standard specifies materials, dimensions, fire performance, and labeling requirements. The IRC adopts UL 2158A by reference, meaning every transition duct used in residential dryer installations must carry UL 2158A listing.
How it works
UL 2158A testing subjects candidate transition ducts to flame exposure, mechanical stress, lint flammability, and durability evaluations. Approved ducts use semi-rigid aluminum or stainless construction with a smooth interior surface. Banned products include white vinyl flexible duct, aluminum foil flex duct, and any product without UL 2158A markings. The standard prohibits screws or sharp interior protrusions that catch lint.
The 8-foot maximum length specified by IRC M1502 applies to UL 2158A transition ducts in single visible runs. Longer concealed runs require rigid metal duct rather than transition duct. Sweeps and dryer-vent specialists carry UL 2158A listed transition ducts on every service vehicle and replace any noncompliant duct found during cleaning visits as part of standard service.
DFW context
DFW homes built before 2010 commonly contain noncompliant flex transition ducts that violate UL 2158A. Replacement is fast and inexpensive, and TSE upgrades transition ducts during routine dryer-vent cleaning whenever a noncompliant unit is found. The labeling requirement makes verification straightforward: any transition duct without a visible UL 2158A mark is prohibited and must be replaced.
