What is UL 1482?

UL 1482 is the Underwriters Laboratories standard for solid-fuel type room heaters, including residential wood stoves, pellet stoves, fireplace inserts, and freestanding solid-fuel appliances. The standard verifies safe operation through testing of structural integrity, surface temperature, exhaust temperature, clearance to combustibles, and behavior during simulated chimney fires. Every wood stove and insert sold in the U.S. must carry UL 1482 listing alongside any applicable EPA emissions certification.

How it works

UL 1482 testing exposes candidate appliances to extended high-temperature operation while monitoring exterior surface temperatures at clearance points, structural distortion, and exhaust performance. The standard verifies that surface temperatures stay below combustion thresholds at listed clearances, that the appliance survives extreme operating conditions including chimney fires, and that vent connections remain intact under thermal stress.

A UL 1482 listing data plate, typically attached to the appliance back or rear panel, documents the model number, manufacturer, listing date, allowable fuel types, and minimum clearances to combustibles in every direction. Substituting non-listed components, such as installing the wrong vent pipe or making structural modifications, voids the listing and removes code compliance. Sweeps verify data plate information during every service visit.

DFW context

DFW wood stove and insert installations are uniformly UL 1482 listed because the certification is required by code. TSE technicians document data plate information on every service call and verify that installed clearances match the listing requirements. When older appliances reach end of useful life or when their original listings have been compromised by undocumented modifications, replacement with current UL 1482 listed units is the standard recommendation.
