What is Tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing is the restoration process of grinding out deteriorated mortar joints to a depth of at least one inch and replacing them with fresh mortar matched in strength, color, and texture to the original. It is the standard repair for masonry chimneys whose mortar has eroded from age, weathering, or freeze-thaw damage. NFPA 211 requires tuckpointing of any joint deeper than 25 percent of the joint width.

How it works

Technicians use a diamond-blade grinder or hand chisel to remove failed mortar without damaging the adjacent brick. The clean joint is then flushed of dust, dampened, and packed with fresh mortar in two passes: a base layer pressed firmly into the joint, followed by a finish layer tooled to match the original profile. Curing requires controlled moisture, which technicians manage with periodic misting and shade.

Mortar selection is critical to long-term success. Soft historic brick demands type N mortar; harder modern brick or load-bearing sections may take type S. Using too-strong mortar against soft brick causes the brick faces to spall as thermal expansion forces find a weaker outlet. Sweeps document mortar joint condition during CSIA Level 2 inspections and recommend tuckpointing scope based on linear feet of failed joint.

DFW context

DFW’s annual freeze-thaw count averages 15 to 25 nights below freezing, with most followed by daytime thaws. Each cycle drives water deeper into mortar joints, expands it as ice, and breaks the mortar bond. Tuckpointing every 20 to 30 years is normal maintenance on DFW chimneys, and the June 2025 hailstorm damage produced a wave of tuckpointing work where hail impact had loosened previously stable joints. TSE prioritizes tuckpointing before applying any waterproof coating.
