What is a Linear Fireplace?
A linear fireplace is a wide, shallow direct-vent gas fireplace with a horizontal aspect ratio, typically four to six feet wide and only 12 to 18 inches deep. The form factor produces a long, ribbon-like flame that suits contemporary architecture and large open-plan rooms. Linear units are listed to ANSI Z21.88 like other direct-vent fireplaces, with the same sealed-combustion safety profile.
How it works
Linear fireplaces use a long burner pan running the full width of the firebox, often with glass media, river rocks, or driftwood-style logs as the visible burn material. The wide footprint creates a flame pattern unlike traditional fireplaces, more like a fire trough than a fire pit. Direct-vent operation means the unit draws outside air for combustion and exhausts through a coaxial or twin-pipe vent system to a horizontal or vertical termination.
Installation requires careful framing because the unit’s width exceeds standard fireplace openings, and the structural header above must support the wall above the unit. Sweeps service linear units annually with the same procedures used for conventional direct-vent fireplaces: glass cleaning, gasket inspection, burner pan cleaning, and CO testing. Glass replacement after damage requires manufacturer-listed panels because tempered glass substitutes can shatter from thermal stress.
DFW context
Linear fireplaces are popular in DFW custom homes and high-end remodels in University Park, Highland Park, Westlake, and Southlake. Their modern aesthetic suits contemporary architecture, and the wide format works well in great rooms with vaulted ceilings. TSE services and installs major linear brands including Heat & Glo Mezzo and Cosmo, Napoleon Vector, and Regency Liberty. Glass replacement after construction damage or accidental impact is a recurring service.
