What is the IFGC?
The IFGC is the International Fuel Gas Code, the model code published by the International Code Council that governs the installation, operation, and venting of fuel gas appliances and systems. It covers natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and other gaseous fuels, and it works alongside NFPA 54 to define safe practice. The IFGC is adopted by reference in most building codes across the United States.
How it works
The IFGC specifies pipe sizing, venting, combustion air, clearances, appliance connection, leak testing, and inspection procedures for gas-fired equipment. For chimneys and fireplaces, the most relevant chapters cover venting systems, combustion air, and direct-vent appliance installation. The code references UL listings for vent components, ANSI standards for appliances, and material specifications for piping.
Sweeps and gas service technicians work under IFGC requirements when installing or maintaining gas log sets, gas inserts, gas fireplaces, and gas water heaters. Permits for new gas appliances or vent system changes must demonstrate IFGC compliance, and inspections include leak testing, clearance verification, and CO measurement at the appliance.
DFW context
DFW jurisdictions including Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, and Allen have adopted the IFGC alongside the IRC, with local amendments. The 2021 IFGC is the current baseline for most municipalities. TSE technicians performing gas appliance work hold appropriate Texas state plumbing or gas-fitter licensing where required and pull permits for new installations and major modifications.
