What is a Damper Clamp?

A damper clamp is a metal stop required by the IFGC to physically prevent a fireplace damper from being closed when a vented gas log set is installed. The clamp ensures that combustion gases can always exit through the chimney during gas log operation, preventing carbon monoxide from spilling into the home if a homeowner inadvertently closed the damper. Damper clamps are required by code on every vented gas log installation.

How it works

The clamp typically consists of a small metal C-bracket or wedge installed on the damper plate or operating mechanism, mechanically blocking the closed position. Some clamps allow partial closure to reduce flue size during burner operation; others lock the damper fully open. The IFGC specifies that the damper must be permanently held in the open position, with the only allowed adjustments being those that maintain proper combustion airflow.

A missing damper clamp is one of the most common code violations TSE technicians find during gas log inspections in older homes. The risk is real: a homeowner unfamiliar with the appliance may close the damper to reduce drafts, then operate the gas logs and produce CO levels that can poison occupants in minutes. Sweeps install damper clamps as standard practice during gas log service and verify presence on every gas log inspection.

DFW context

DFW homes with vented gas logs installed before strict code enforcement frequently lack damper clamps, particularly homes where homeowners installed the gas logs without professional service. TSE installs damper clamps during every gas log service and tags them with a label noting installation date. The labels also serve as inspection documentation for real estate transactions, where buyers’ inspectors regularly cite missing damper clamps in older homes.
