What is a CSIA Level 3 Inspection?

A CSIA Level 3 inspection is the most invasive chimney evaluation, involving removal of permanent components such as masonry, drywall, or framing to access concealed portions of the chimney that cannot be examined under Level 2. NFPA 211 specifies Level 3 only when Level 1 or Level 2 findings strongly suggest concealed damage and when the suspected condition cannot be evaluated any other way.

How it works

The technician performs Level 1 and Level 2 procedures first, then identifies specific concealed areas requiring access. Drywall is cut, masonry is selectively removed, or framing is opened to expose the suspect zone. After inspection and any necessary remediation, the components are restored. Level 3 work typically follows a chimney fire, observed structural movement, persistent leaks of unknown origin, or major insurance claims.

Level 3 inspections are not routine and represent the smallest fraction of CSIA inspection volume. They require careful coordination with the homeowner, often the insurance carrier, and any structural professionals involved. Documentation includes photographs and video at every stage of access and reassembly, providing a complete record for insurance and code compliance purposes.

DFW context

Level 3 inspections in DFW arise most often after structural movement from foundation issues on Blackland Prairie clay or after severe chimney fires that damaged framing concealed inside chases. Following the June 2025 hailstorms, several Level 3 inspections were triggered when Level 2 video found cracks of unknown depth that required selective masonry removal to characterize. TSE coordinates Level 3 work directly with insurance adjusters and licensed contractors when structural access is required.
