What is a CSIA Level 1 Inspection?

A CSIA Level 1 inspection is the basic readily-accessible chimney evaluation performed during routine annual service. The technician examines all readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior, the connection between appliance and chimney, and the readily accessible portions of the appliance itself. NFPA 211 defines Level 1 as appropriate when the appliance and venting system are unchanged and operation has been routine.

How it works

The technician inspects the firebox, damper, smoke chamber visible from below, accessible flue interior, chimney exterior at the roof, crown or cap, and any visible flashing. No special tools beyond standard inspection equipment are used: flashlight, mirror, brush, and basic measurement devices. Findings are documented on a Level 1 report card with photos of any deficiencies noted, and the homeowner receives a written copy.

Level 1 is appropriate for chimneys with no recent fires, no appliance changes, no visible damage, and no operational complaints. When any of those conditions changes, the inspection escalates to Level 2 with video scan and more detailed structural evaluation. Sweeps must be CSIA-certified to perform inspections to the published Level 1 standard, and certifications are renewed every three years through continuing education.

DFW context

DFW homeowners book Level 1 inspections most commonly in fall before the winter burn season, with TSE running its peak appointment volume from October through January. A Level 1 visit on a typical DFW masonry fireplace runs 45 to 75 minutes including the sweep, with reports delivered same-day. Real estate transactions in the region also drive Level 1 volume, though buyers’ agents increasingly request Level 2 due diligence on older homes.
