What is an Animal Guard?
An animal guard is heavy-gauge stainless steel mesh on a chimney cap engineered to exclude larger wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, opossums, and bats from entering the flue. While bird guards cover the same function, animal guards typically use thicker wire or smaller openings to handle the strength and persistence of larger animals. NFPA 211 mesh requirements form the baseline, with stronger mesh recommended in regions with heavy wildlife pressure.
How it works
Animal guards use 11-gauge or thicker stainless wire, woven or welded into a sturdy mesh that resists chewing, prying, and impact. Raccoons in particular are highly intelligent and persistent, capable of damaging or removing inadequate guards. Welded mesh resists raccoon attacks better than woven mesh because the welded joints cannot be pulled apart. The mesh integrates into the cap structure as the sidewalls between the roof and base flange.
Animal intrusions into chimneys are common in DFW because suburban wildlife populations have adapted to urban environments. Once an animal enters a chimney, removal is hazardous and time-consuming, and a dead animal trapped in the flue produces serious odor and health concerns. Sweeps recommend animal guards proactively for properties near greenbelts, creeks, and wooded areas, and they provide wildlife removal as a separate emergency service when intrusions occur.
DFW context
DFW raccoon populations are dense, particularly in neighborhoods adjacent to greenbelts in North Dallas, Plano, and along the Trinity River. Squirrels are universal across the metroplex, and bats colonize chimneys in older neighborhoods. TSE installs heavy-gauge stainless animal guards on properties with documented wildlife pressure and provides removal services with a licensed wildlife control partner when intrusions occur. Animal guard installation is a one-time investment that prevents recurring emergency calls.
